Oh, Canada...
Needless to say, I'm incredibly disappointed with the results of last night's federal election, and its left me feeling somewhat disillusioned with the Canadian public in general. The minority nature of the newly-elected conservative government is its one and only consolatory factor - at least there'll be enough Liberals and now New Democrats (who are back with an encouraging 29 seats) in parliament to help balance the power. Still worrisome, however, is that there is nothing stopping Harper from forming an alliance with one or more of the other parties to push the conservative agenda. I guess only time will tell.
In any case, we can still expect to see some profound and widespread changes in the way things are done around here, especially in terms of foreign policy, or, more specifically, in terms of Canada-US relations - we're about to get a whooooole lot friendlier with one another, and, as we all know, that's not exactly a good thing.
More troubling still is the fact that some analysts are already predicting a conservative majority in 2008, if Harper plays his cards right and manages to make good on his campaign promises.
...And that's when I pick up and move to the Netherlands.
Anyway, I'm sitting in an "Introduction to Online Journalism" class at the moment, so I'll have to cut this short. More posts to come soon, hopefully something not ranty or political for a change...
